Video Game Seizure Symptoms and Warnings

Gaming Related Seizures

The news is full of information about violent behavior that appears to be encouraged by the violence in video games.  Recently, cases of video game addiction are being examined on talk shows, as well.  News of gaming related seizures is not as prevalent.

What you should know about video game seizures

Individuals who have been diagnosed with photosensitive epilepsy are most likely aware of the potential dangers of playing video games.  But, many people are not yet aware that they have a seizure condition.  Remember: even if you have never experienced a video game seizure or blackout, any new game you play, or even a change in room conditions, can trigger your first seizure.  You can reduce the risk of experiencing seizures from gaming-related epilepsy by heeding these warnings:

  • Seizures can be caused by flashing images on the screen.
  • Flickering or rolling images can trigger seizures.
  • High contrast images can trigger seizures in individuals who suffer from video game epilepsy.
  • The risk of television-induced seizure increases when an individual is too close to the screen.
  • Playing in a dimly-lit room can increase seizure risk.
  • Playing on a large screen is more likely to trigger seizures than a smaller screen.
  • Playing if you are tired or without taking breaks at least every hour can increase the risk of seizures.
  • While warnings are required on all video games, they may be missing from the packaging when you rent a game.
  • Seizure symptoms may be as severe as convulsions; however, they can also be more difficult to recognize.  Watch for any of these conditions related to video games and epilepsy:

  • Loss of awareness
  • Involuntary movements
  • Twitching of eyes or other muscles
  • Altered vision
  • Disorientation
